Embedding Fixed Amounts and Festive Discount Notes into Static UPI QR Codes

Open static QR codes require customers to manually type the payable amount. During festive sales, this creates checkout bottlenecks: customers ask "How much was that again?", mistype numbers (typing ₹49 instead of ₹499), or forget promotional discounts. Pre-encoding exact amounts and promo descriptions into dedicated QR standees removes this friction entirely.

By locking the price and promo reference into the QR payload, the customer camera app immediately opens a pre-filled, non-editable payment modal. Billing lines move twice as fast.

1. The Raw UPI URI Anatomy

Every UPI QR code is simply an encoded URI string. Standard UPI protocol allows parameter injection directly into the payload:

upi://pay?pa=merchant@icici&pn=ShreeSweets&am=499.00&cu=INR&tn=DiwaliComboOffer

Here is what each parameter accomplishes:

  • pa (Payee Address): Your registered business VPA.
  • pn (Payee Name): Your store name as registered with the bank.
  • am (Amount): The fixed price locked to two decimal places. When scanned, the customer app displays this amount and disallows editing.
  • cu (Currency): Always INR.
  • tn (Transaction Note): The promotional label (e.g., DiwaliHamper999). This note is printed on the customer receipt and appears in your bank statement.

2. Creating Shelf-Edge Offer QRs for Standard SKUs

For standardized festive stock-keeping units (SKUs)—such as ₹299 sweet boxes, ₹599 gift baskets, or ₹1,499 dry fruit platters—print dedicated mini-standees (5 cm x 5 cm) placed directly beside the product stacks.

Shoppers grab the item, scan the shelf QR, complete payment, and show the green confirmation tick to the floor cashier on their way out. This distributes billing away from the central till.

Festive SKU Pre-Encoded Amount Transaction Note (tn=) Placement Strategy
Mithai Gift Box Mini ₹299.00 MITHAI299 Attached to product display rack
Royal Dry Fruit Hamper ₹999.00 DRYFRUIT999 Shelf-edge table tent standee
Luxury Assorted Box ₹1,999.00 LUXURY1999 Dedicated express checkout counter

3. Avoiding Locked Amount Rejections

Some third-party UPI apps restrict amount-locked static QRs if the VPA is registered as a personal P2P account rather than a verified merchant account (P2M). If your QR is generated from a personal savings account VPA, locking the amount via am= can trigger a warning: "Merchant does not support fixed amount QR". Ensure your VPA is registered through a merchant acquiring application (Google Pay for Business, PhonePe Business, Paytm for Business) before rolling out fixed-amount standees across your store.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a customer change the amount on a fixed-amount QR code?

No. When standard UPI apps parse a URI containing the am= parameter, the amount field is locked and grayed out. The customer cannot edit the value, preventing accidental or intentional underpayment.

What happens if a customer scans an amount-locked QR code with an older banking app?

All modern NPCI-compliant UPI applications (BHIM, Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, Cred, Navi, Amazon Pay) strictly adhere to the NPCI QR specification and parse the am= parameter reliably.

How does the transaction note help in bank reconciliation?

The string specified in tn= flows through the NPCI clearing network into your merchant settlement report. When exporting your monthly CSV, you can filter sales by promo code (e.g. MITHAI299) to evaluate promotion performance without manual receipt audits.
