UPI Handled 24.07 Billion Payments in September 2026: What It Means for Your Shop

UPI handled 24.07 billion payments worth ₹29.37 lakh crore in September 2026, according to NPCI data reported on 1 October. That is a small fall from August's record of 24.51 billion payments, but the daily average crossed 800 million for the first time. For a shop heading into Diwali, the message is simple: more of your customers will reach for UPI, so your QR code needs to work every time.

September figures as reported from NPCI's data release; last checked 13 October 2026.

1. What the September numbers say

In plain terms, 24.07 billion is about 2,407 crore payments, and ₹29.37 lakh crore is about ₹29.37 trillion. Compared with August, volume fell by about 1.8% and value by about 1.5%. Business Today notes that September had 30 days against 31 in August, so the dip does not by itself point to a slowdown.

Per day, the picture is better. UPI processed an average of about 802 million payments a day in September, up from about 791 million in August. The average daily value rose to ₹97,913 crore from ₹96,205 crore. Year on year, volume is up about 23% and value about 18%.

Here are the recent months side by side. May to August come from NPCI's own statistics page; September is from the news reports of NPCI's release. The last column is our own calculation.

Month (2026)PaymentsValueAverage payment (about)
May23.20 billion₹29.90 lakh crore₹1,289
June22.72 billion₹28.92 lakh crore₹1,273
July23.66 billion₹29.88 lakh crore₹1,263
August24.51 billion₹29.82 lakh crore₹1,217
September24.07 billion₹29.37 lakh crore₹1,220

2. What "average payment size" means

Divide the total value by the number of payments and you get the average payment. For September that is ₹29.37 lakh crore divided by 24.07 billion, which comes to about ₹1,220. In May it was about ₹1,289, so the average is lower than it was in May, though it edged up slightly from August (₹1,217). One likely reason is that people are using UPI for more everyday, smaller payments.

An average is not what your customer pays. A chai stall and a furniture shop will see very different numbers. It only tells you the overall direction.

3. What this means for a small shop

This section is our reading of the data, not something NPCI or the news reports say.

  • More customers will expect to pay by UPI. Payments per day keep rising. A shop that still says "cash only" or "UPI not working today" may lose sales to the next shop.
  • Most payments are small. Business Today, quoting government data, says payments up to ₹2,000 are more than 96% of UPI merchant payments. Your counter will mostly see quick, small scans, so speed matters more than anything fancy.
  • Busy hours are when problems show. Reports for September do not give any reliability figures, so we cannot say how Diwali will go. But when many people pay at once, one slow bank or one faded QR can hold up a whole queue.

4. One date to watch: 15 October

A new merchant discount rate (MDR) was announced to start on 15 October 2026, but reports since 8 October say it may be deferred to January 2027, and as of 13 October there is no official confirmation either way. As announced, it applies to certain person-to-merchant payments above ₹2,000 at 0.4%. Payments up to ₹2,000 stay at zero MDR, and small merchants in the "P2PM" category receiving up to ₹1 lakh a month through UPI QR codes are outside it. We explain the details in our guide to the 0.4% UPI merchant fee. Medianama reports that only about 4% of September's 15.22 billion person-to-merchant payments were above ₹2,000.

Rules like this can change and have exceptions, so check the details with your bank or payment app before you act on them.

5. Festive-season checklist for your counter

  • Print a fresh, large QR code and replace any that are scratched, wet or faded. You can print a counter standee or poster here.
  • Keep a second QR code from another bank account or app, in case one is slow. Our guide on backup UPI QR codes for the festive rush explains how.
  • Test your own QR with a small payment from a friend's phone, and confirm the shop name shown is correct.
  • Check your phone's battery, charger and internet before opening each day.
  • Keep a list of common failure messages and fixes handy. See why UPI payments fail and how to fix them.
  • Check the payment alert on your phone before handing over goods. Do not rely on a customer's screen alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Did UPI slow down in September 2026?

Not by these numbers. The monthly total was about 1.8% lower than August, but September has one day fewer. Per day, both the number of payments and their value went up.

Is UPI still growing?

Yes. Compared with September 2025, payments are up about 23% and value about 18%, as reported from NPCI data.

Do I need a new QR code for Diwali?

Not if your current one scans fast and shows the right name. But a clean printed copy is worth having. If you are starting out, read how to create a UPI QR code for your business, or our beginner's guide to UPI.
